The demonstrators returned in large numbers to the streets, Thursday, March 23, for the ninth day of mobilization against the pension reform. Between 1.1 million people, according to the Ministry of the Interior, and 3.5 million, according to the CGT, marched throughout France. A clear rebound compared to the two previous days of mobilization. This was the first major mobilization after the use of article 49.3, which allowed the adoption of the text without a vote in the Assembly, on March 16. This decision cheered up the movement, since the processions were almost as crowded as at the height of the mobilization, on Tuesday March 7.

To produce this graph, franceinfo compiled the figures recorded by the unions organizing the demonstrations and by the Ministry of the Interior during previous days of national mobilization against pension reforms, since the Juppé plan of 1995.

Mobilization records equaled or beaten

The crowd on Tuesday March 7 remains the strongest of the movement, with 1.28 million demonstrators, according to the Ministry of the Interior, and 3.5 million, according to the CGT. It is also the record for 30 years for a mobilization against a pension reform, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. The previous record was previously attributed to the demonstration of October 12, 2010, which brought together 1.23 million demonstrators against the reform of the government of François Fillon. But at the time, this figure had been reached after more than 200 days of mobilization.

On the union data side, the figures for March 23 show an attendance equivalent to the records of autumn 2010. The unions, which traditionally give higher estimates than those of the authorities, had counted up to 3.5 million demonstrators on October 12 and 19, 2010 .
