Who will be the Republican candidate in the US presidential election? The results of “Super Tuesday”, Tuesday March 5, leave little doubt. Donald Trump and Nikki Haley are the only personalities still in the running to obtain the conservative nomination, determined at the end of the primaries organized between January and June in 50 states, the District of Columbia (where the capital, Washington is located) and five other territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, Mariana Islands and American Samoa). The billionaire is now well ahead of his rival, with 797 delegate votes against 62 for Nikki Haley, according to the AP agency’s count at 8:30 a.m. (Paris time).

To win the nomination, a candidate must obtain the votes of a majority of delegates at the Republican Party’s national convention, which will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from July 15 to 18. A total of 2,429 delegates will be called to vote this year. To be officially nominated as the Republican candidate for next November’s presidential election, Donald Trump must therefore reach the threshold of 1,215 votes. According to his team, he could achieve this as early as mid-March.

The ex-president, at the top of voting intentions according to the poll aggregator on the site FiveThirtyEight, is therefore almost certain to be inaugurated in July, despite indictments in several cases which will be judged this year. He hopes to face Joe Biden in the November 5 election, and thus replay the poster of 2020. The Democrat, who won the election four years ago, is for his part almost guaranteed to obtain the nomination of his left.
