“Me, freedom, I am,” said Mr. Legault, associating the tax measures he announced on Monday (a tax cut from 2023 and a new check sent to taxpayers by the end of the year). year) as a gesture to restore the freedom of Quebecers to choose where to spend their money.

“But freedom doesn’t prevent you from being responsible. Me, I did not come into politics to put instructions, close places and [dire aux] people to pay attention. […] But when it comes to saving lives, we have a duty as citizens, ”continued Mr. Legault.

Éric Duhaime and the Conservative Party have been on a crusade for months against the health measures imposed by the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) since the start of the pandemic. A Conservative government, he recently told The Presswould have encouraged citizens to follow them, but would not have imposed them.

“When it comes to saving lives, we have a duty as citizens. I think of our elders. They are the ones who built Quebec. We had a duty to do everything to protect them. Freedom does not prevent one from being responsible. […] We acted responsibly,” defended François Legault.

On Sunday, at the start of the election campaign in Quebec, the head of the CAQ said he was not afraid that Mr. Duhaime’s party would cause him problems in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.

“I think that there is a large majority of Quebecers, including in Quebec, including in Beauce, who have been and who are in solidarity with the most vulnerable people […]. I have confidence that in Quebec and in Beauce, the majority of Quebecers will follow us,” he said.

According to the Qc125 electoral projection site, the CAQ must watch in its rear view mirror the Conservative candidates in the ridings of Beauce-Sud and Beauce-Nord, currently respectively held by Samuel Poulin and Luc Provençal.
