Visit a pyramid thanks to virtual reality!

How about traveling to Egypt and visiting a pyramid? To fly to its summit to admire the Nile valley? To travel back in time and discover the era of the pharaohs? Well, I’m telling you that it’s possible and that it’s MAGIC! The immersive experience The horizon of Khufu arrived in Quebec and I was able to try it. I tell you !

When I think about my virtual trip to Egypt, I still get chills! The horizon of Khufu, it’s a 45-minute adventure in virtual reality during which we visit the Great Pyramid of Cheops. We enter the pyramid, we go around it and we even go to its summit. It’s Mona, a young virtual guide, who accompanies us and tells us the history of this 4,500 year old pyramid!

What is virtual reality?

It is a technology that allows us to immerse ourselves, as if we were there, in a three-dimensional world created by computer. We put on a helmet equipped with small screens and headphones. Images and sound are influenced by our movements and our interactions with the environment.

In this fantastic adventure, we also travel back in time with the magnificent cat goddess Bastet. She introduces us to the time of the pharaohs, who reigned in Egypt for 3000 years!

The images are of great beauty and, above all, very realistic. We really feel like we’re there! So much so that I felt dizzy a few times!

Specialists on mission

No wonder the experience is so believable. Fabien Barati, big boss of Excurio, the company that created The horizon of Khufu, confirms this to me: “All we see of the current pyramid are real images that we went to film on site. It’s exactly like in reality! It is a virtual copy of the pyramid. »

Do you wonder if what we are shown and told is faithful to History? Do not worry ! A great expert on Egypt, Peter Der Manuelian, made sure that everything was true!

It took two years and more than 100 people to create this virtual reality adventure. We used real actors to create the characters we meet. On the other hand, no real cat was used to create the goddess Bastet. “It’s complicated with animals!” » Fabien Barati explains to me.

When I ask him what his favorite part of the adventure is… he names almost all of them! But the moment when one rises to the top of the pyramid comes first. As for me… despite the vertigo!
