Five months after its launch in the United States, it is from Friday July 12 that the Vision Pro, Apple’s virtual reality mask is available in France. Is it a revolution? In fact, it depends on who! We must start by recalling its price: 4,000 euros. It is clearly not within everyone’s reach. A virtual reality mask is in fact a computer stuck on the face, which will superimpose digital images in its field of vision or completely immerse us in a virtual universe.

The main difference with Apple’s mask is its completely new image quality. Sometimes, the images produced inside are simply impossible to distinguish from reality. This allows for incredible applications: watching a film as if you were sitting on the moon in front of a 10-meter wide screen, for example. I was able to attend a rehearsal in the studio of the singer Alicia Keys. The immersion, the 3D was such that I really felt like I was there. Eventually, major events, such as shows or sports broadcasts, will be broadcast live in this way. The potential is enormous, but again, I’m not sure that it justifies the price of 4,000 euros. Especially since the mask completely cuts you off from the world. And this is typically the kind of experience that we like to share with our loved ones.

Apple’s virtual reality mask is probably aimed at professionals. They are the ones who could benefit the most from it. Since its launch in the United States, we have seen a whole series of applications aimed at them. It can be used, for example, by architects to visualize renovations before they have taken place. The client will physically walk around their house. But they will see the new decoration, the wall that we want to knock down, the new bathroom, the remodeled kitchen… All this, in an ultra-realistic way as if the work had already been done. If they want another proposal, we can change a color or a material instantly. The same goes for doctors, especially surgeons. They can repeat their operation on a digital double of the patient before carrying it out for real. On the big day, they will find, superimposed in their field of vision, precise guides with all the information. This will limit errors and be more efficient. Suddenly, the famous investment of 4,000 euros will be easier to justify.
