On Saturday, December 11, several states in the central United States were hit by devastating and deadly tornadoes. The latest provisional toll shows 78 dead.
In the town of Mayfield, Kentucky, the images are striking. The tornadoes have ravaged the landscape and the buildings are in ruins. In a factory candles in the city, an employee was stranded under the rubble for several hours before being rescued. Kentucky is the state most affected by tornadoes. Indeed, more than 70 deaths are to be deplored and the governor speaks of an episode of tornado “the most devastating in the history of our state“.
“An unimaginable tragedy” for Joe Biden
Apart from Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee were also hit by these violent tornadoes. In Illinois, an Amazon building with several employees inside was hit and help is now on the job to find them. US President Joe Biden took to Twitter to respond to the tornadoes: “Losing a loved one in a storm like this is an unimaginable tragedye“. Joe Biden then spoke in front of the camera. In total, 78 deaths are, for the moment, to be deplored, across the five states.
