Violent fire in Old Montreal

People were reportedly injured early Thursday morning in Old Montreal, when a building including residences was engulfed in a violent fire.

The old three-storey building, whose civic address is located on du Port Street, is located at the intersection of Place d’Youville, a few dozen meters from the Pointe-à-Callière Museum.

Witnesses reported seeing injured people being carried by members of the emergency services; their number remained undetermined at dawn, and nothing was known about their condition.

Several dozen firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SSIM) were on the scene to fight the flames. Five alarms were reportedly sounded in the barracks.

The fire reportedly started shortly before 6 a.m. About an hour later, flames emerging from the damaged building remained visible and a very large plume of smoke was reported as far as the outskirts of the city center.

The SSIM ensured before 7 a.m. that it would soon be able to deliver information on its operations.
