Violent fire in a shelter

A major fire is underway in a shelter in the borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, in the heart of Montreal.

According to the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM), it was around 8:45 a.m. that the fire broke out this morning, on the first floor of the building located near Marquette Park, near rue de Bellechasse. The general alarm has been triggered.

A total of 150 firefighters are on site to fight the flames. The 37 occupants of the house were quickly evacuated. A firefighter was nevertheless injured during the intervention, but his life is not in danger.

For now, the SIM says firefighters are “still in attack mode” to control the fire. No other buildings are currently affected by the flames.

The SIM takes this opportunity to remind the population of the importance of determining in advance a gathering place to evacuate the building during this type of event.
