Violent crime continues to decline in the United States, according to the FBI

Crime in the United States fell again in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to annual statistics published Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), contradicting Donald Trump’s claims of rampant violence.

The reduction is generally 3%, with in particular a fall in murders of 11.6% in 2023 compared to 2022, rapes of 9.4% and a fall in physical assaults of 2.8%.

Property thefts also fell by 2.4%, but in this category vehicle thefts increased again, by 12.6% in one year.

Former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has campaigned without supporting his claims about a “crime wave” sweeping the country and blaming it largely on immigrants, openly disputes the FBI statistics.

Without directly addressing those claims, an FBI official said Monday during the presentation of the report that it had been following the same methodology “for decades,” noting that the statistics for 2023 covered more than 94% of the American population.

Violent crime also declined in 2022, according to the FBI.
