Vincent Macaigne and Aïssa Maïga in a tragicomic nursing home welcoming children

After the incest of “Tickles”, Andréa Bescond and Eric Métayer look at a retirement home, seen through the eyes of a caregiver and a school facilitator.

Crowned with prizes including two César with TicklesAndréa Bescond and Eric Métayer are co-directing their second film, When you are older, real immersion in an Ehpad. Obliged to accommodate a class of children in breakdown of canteen, it is a small revolution which agitates the establishment. On screen Wednesday April 26, Vincent Macaigne and Aïsa Maïga confront practice and theory in a film where the two authors of the screenplay and the film find their tone of lightness to talk about a serious subject.

An observant eye

Nursing assistant in an Ehpad, Yannick (Vincent Macaigne) manages his role with enthusiasm and humor, between lack of staff and limited budget. Until the day when the neighboring school, temporarily deprived of a canteen, asks the Ehpad to allow the children to benefit from its canteen. Yannick takes a dim view of this cohabitation and his point of view clashes with that of Aude (Aïssa Maïga), the class leader. Well-established habits will be shaken up for everyone.

The nursing homes have been the subject of many documentary reports in the news and the press. Andréa Bescond and Eric Métayer choose never to leave the establishment. With in the first part a camera observing care, administrative advice, meetings or breaks. Vincent Macaigne, very on screen at the moment and always constant, twirls around in his little world despite the constraints. The drama takes over with the arrival of the children, and the meeting of two opposing personalities who will go towards each other.

Passes d’armes

The cheerful and communicative Yannick does not accept this intrusion, arguing that it is about the tranquility of the residents, the disruption of their habits, the noise and the extra work. Aude defends the presence of a beneficial and regenerating youth among the elderly, a surprise of life, where they reconnect with their feelings of grandparents. Vincent Macaigne and Aïsa Maïga, perfectly at ease in their roles, play their passes under the gaze of staff and residents, among whom the caregiver will find himself isolated.

Andréa Bescond and Éric Métayer manage with conviction and realism to integrate us into the daily life of a community life, where human involvement is at all times. The plot, the dialogues and the acting convince until a small breathlessness, where the spectator seems to have made the rounds of the stakes and that a revival would not have been too much. But addressing a societal and topical subject, When you are older find the tone and the material for a most refreshing nursing home cruise.
