Vincent Lindon as a disoriented super executive in a landmark film by Stéphane Brizé

This is the fifth time that Stéphane Brizé has directed Vincent Lindon in Another world, which comes out on Wednesday January 16, and the second in which Sandrine Kiberlain accompanies her, after Miss Chambon. His new film sees a couple separate under the pressure of the professional obligations of the director of an American company in France. Brizé applies his proven method: a dynamic script and filming as close as possible to inspired actors.

Philippe Lemes divorces him at the request of his wife who accuses him of neglecting her in favor of his work. As a leader, he is treated like an executor who no longer understands his hierarchy, while his wife cuts off ties with him. Philippe Lemesle enters another world and seeks to restore meaning to his life.

A man collapses following the questioning of his work and his separation from his wife. We would crumble unless. Vincent Lindon endorses like a chameleon a weakened character who tries to hide his emotional feelings, his social sensitivity, and his philosophical convictions. So far careerist and stable in his couple, he is attacked from all sides. His time spent in the office, in the film, is much longer than that devoted to his wife and son. A temporality on the screen which translates the grievances that his wife accuses him of. A large part of the film is based on Lindon’s acting which translates the impact of this divergence, doubled by the injunctions of his direction. This actor is a high-precision clock and journalist Marie Drucker is impressively accurate in her role as director of the American franchise in France.

Another world is a bit of an extension of The law of the market, where already Vincent Lindon, head of security of a supermarket, was faced with a social plan after suffering twenty months of unemployment. Both face a moral dilemma, where the employer’s demand clashes with their personal beliefs. We would have liked his relationship with his wife to be deeper, especially since the role of this neglected woman is played by Sandrine Kiberlain.

Miss Chambon showed the meeting between a tenant and a house painter who could, ten years later, have become a manager and be married to her. With between the two films The law of the market, Another world becomes the third part of a trilogy on human relationships, seen through the prism of the increasingly tenuous balance between work and intimacy. We could add In war, where Vincent Lindon played a trade unionist faced with the closure of an industrial site. With Another world, Stéphane Brizé pursues this social theme, shows the coherence of a subject, nourished by a remarkable dramaturgy.

Summary: A business executive, his wife, his family, when the professional choices of one are changing the lives of all. Philippe Lemesle and his wife separate, a love damaged by the pressure of work. A successful executive in an industrial group, Philippe no longer knows how to respond to the incoherent injunctions of his management. We wanted him to be a leader yesterday, today we want him to be an executor. He is at the moment when he has to decide on the meaning of his life.
