Ville-Marie Highway | Homeless camp dismantled

As expected, the Quebec Ministry of Transport proceeded on Tuesday morning to dismantle the homeless camp installed for several years under the Ville-Marie highway, near downtown Montreal.

The MTQ affirms that the eviction of campers is necessary to undertake major work on the structure of the viaduct.

Community organizations that help the homeless say that solutions have been found to rehouse seven of them, but ten others are still waiting to find an apartment, in the midst of a housing crisis.

Tuesday morning, a few campers were busy picking up their possessions to store them in containers made available to them by the MTQ.

Then, at 9 a.m., a loader entered the site to finish clearing the area.

Demonstrators carrying a banner proclaiming “No to evictions” chanted slogans, while several police officers prevented the media from accessing the camp.

More details to come.
