Vietnam: three dead in floods after heavy rains

(Hanoi) In Vietnam, three people died after several days of heavy rains which caused flash floods in the center and north of the country, authorities announced Tuesday.

Access to several villages in Ha Tinh province was cut off, while the police and the army were mobilized to rescue residents in high-risk areas.

A woman and a 13-year-old boy were found dead in this region after being swept away by strong currents.

The search continues for a 29-year-old woman, also in Ha Tinh, the flood and storm control department said in its latest report.

Hundreds of homes, crops and portions of the national road and railway linking the north and south of Vietnam were submerged by water.

In Cao Bang province, which borders China, a man was killed when a large tree fell on his house during heavy rain.

Vietnam is often hit by harsh weather conditions during the rainy season, between June and November.

Natural disasters, including floods and landslides, have left 136 people dead or missing in the country since the start of the year.

According to scientists, extreme weather events are intensified by global warming.
