“We see a lot of abandonments unfortunately.” Pierre Fabing is an emergency veterinarian. Brut followed him for a day to discover his profession.

“Emergency veterinarians are a bit between SOS Médecins and SAMU. So we only see sick animals, injured animals” explains Pierre Fabing, emergency veterinarian. They work mainly at night and on weekends, so as not to replace the usual animal veterinarians. Equipped with 25 kilos of equipment, Pierre is able to deal with any type of emergency. However, he does not perform major operations such as caesareans. The emergency veterinarian also conducts home consultations in the Île-de-France region and provides advice over the phone to direct pet owners to the best service.

For Pierre, his job has been a passion since childhood. He was born into a family of veterinary assistants and grew up on a farm. Although the studies are long (on average bac+7) and Pierre specifies that “The medical profession has the most suicides,” The specialist does not regret his choice. Unlike human medicine, veterinary medicine is not reimbursed. For those who cannot afford it, the veterinarian recommends taking out insurance, for around €15 per month, which can cover the animal’s health.
