A high school student, Aïssata is the only hearing impaired in her class. A situation that suits her very well, which invites all deaf people to “mix with people who can hear”. Brut followed her for a day.

I find it nice, because when people see me, they don’t know that I wear hearing aids and that I’m deaf”. Aïssata lost her hearing at the age of six and a half. Today in high school, she is the only hearing impaired person in her class. “I heard less when I was in Mali. It was my aunt who knew that I couldn’t hear well, and she transferred me here to hear better, to have devices and an implant”. Equipped with implants, she manages to read lips and express herself.

“To deaf people: try to mix with hearing people”

It is a handicap that is invisible. She speaks well too, so you don’t notice it. The benefit of mixing students with disabilities and students without disabilities is twofold. For ordinary students, it will be to be able to be made aware of this problem of deafness. For Aïssata, it allows her to evolve in a completely normal environment, to have a “normal” adolescent life, in quotes. She’s a student like the others” explains Wahiba Allam, head teacher.

On TikTok, Aïssata created an account to talk about her disability and raise awareness of sign language. “I learned sign language in specialized primary school with the deaf and hard of hearing. I created a TikTok account to help deaf and hard of hearing people. These are videos where I teach people to speak in sign language” describes Aïssata.
