The history of the city of Dakar began with the Lébous, the first inhabitants.
“When they arrived here, after resisting slavery, they said that this country is ‘Deuka raw’. Deuk, country, Raw, refuge, the country refuge”explains Abdoul Khadre Gaye.
The city was built with the significant events experienced by the Lébous, including the colonization of the city by the French in 1857 with Auguste-Léopold Protet.
“All this part became the property of the whites, and on the other side lived the Lébous”describes Abdoul Khadre Gaye.
