In a context of intense social protest in the face of pension reform and a major demonstration in Dijon, François Rebsamen, mayor of the city, receives Olivier Véran, government spokesperson. In their exchange, they also address what they call “the mess on the left”. Excerpt from the “Succession” series of the magazine “1:15 p.m. on Sunday”.
After a large demonstration at the end of May in Dijon, bringing together more than 5,000 people according to the police and having injured one of the police, Olivier Véran, spokesperson for the government, went there to meet François Rebsamen , socialist mayor of the city.
A formal meeting which nevertheless sounds like a reunion between two old acquaintances of the PS. A kiss to greet each other, then the two men tease each other. “The prefect tells me that you were remarkable in the management of the demonstration, that you completely agree with the substance of the reform, that you fully support…”, quipped the government spokesman. “No, I didn’t say that”, replies the mayor, before laughing out loud.
“There is a deep divide in society”
“I still feel, I tell you, a deep fracture in society today. (…) It was not the time to embark on this reform, at this moment”, confides François Rebsamen, in a more serious tone. Olivier Véran’s answer is just as important: “A reform like the pension reform, you know that better than me, if you don’t do it at the start of your mandate, you never do it.”
The discussion continues, then Olivier Véran tackles another subject: “Can we talk a bit about the brothel on the left?” ; “Oh, well yes, of course. I don’t recognize myself in this mess. It’s not a socialist party, it’s the party of submission to the rebellious! (…) We have to rebuild everything”, regrets the mayor of Dijon. “You see the fragility of the residual parties: the mayor of Rouen has stumbled upon the PS and a deputy absolutely unknown to the battalion is in the process of completing the work of smashing the LRs: Pradié. This is where you see the fragility of the structures “, believes Olivier Véran.
