Météo France warns of a very high risk of avalanches in the Hautes-Pyrénées, this Saturday March 9 and this Sunday March 10, 2024.
As the holidays in zones A and B end this weekend, Météo France warns of a very high risk of avalanches this Saturday March 9 and Sunday March 10, 2024 in the Pyrenees. It is 4/5 in the Hautes-Pyrénées, the maximum risk for practitioners and 3/5 in Haute-Ariège. According to Meteo France, many new weak slabs formed last night and continue to form.
A fairly violent wind, from the south, blew all night with gusts of up to 130 km/h as we can see in this video posted on the Météo des Pyrénées Facebook account.
Be very careful if you have to travel in the mountains. “Certain avalanches could sometimes be triggered remotely by a hiker traveling on apparently not very difficult slopes.explains the National Association for the Study of Snow and Avalanches on its Facebook page.
“If triggered, medium to large avalanches could result and carry away a group of hikers; in the event of a very large avalanche, they would also be likely to reach infrastructure further downstream,” warns ANENA.
