Ferrero launched a new version of its traditional spread on Wednesday, September 4: a vegan recipe, in other words with a recipe without ingredients of animal origin. The pot displays a “plant based” Nutella and a green lid, which makes it easy to differentiate on the shelves.

Milk has been replaced by chickpeas and rice syrup. But for those who are lactose intolerant, vigilance is still required because it is specified that this new version “may contain traces of milk”. Probably because there is no factory dedicated to this product alone. With this recipe, Ferrero is obviously targeting vegetarians and vegans, but also the 40% of French people who say they want to eat more plant-based products.

Blindly, the vegan Nutella is very similar to its big brother, even if the texture of the vegan paste is a little more melting. But be careful, the new recipe still contains a lot of sugar (45%), in addition to cocoa and hazelnuts. It also still contains palm oil, which is highly contested for its impact on the environment.

As for the price, it is difficult to make precise comparisons because the product is just arriving on the shelves and each store can offer a different price. It is still necessary to keep in mind that, although the two pots are very similar, the “original” version contains 400g of paste compared to 350g for the vegan version.
