“We didn’t come to die, we came to live.” Nadège is an asylum seeker and resident in a reception center in Sartrouville. For Brut, she exposes the difficult conditions in which she lives with her two children.

“We live in an impossible condition. There are cockroaches, gnats, bugs in the beds. I’ve been there for two years and the place is really, really, really dirty.”

Nadège fled Côte d’Ivoire to escape excision, practiced in her country. She first takes refuge in Tunisia, where she suffers rape and violence, before joining France.

But when she joins the reception center of Sartrouville, the mother discovers the unsanitary places in which she will have to stay.

“When they sent me here, they said it was a good place. But all they told me was not that. Even if we clean up, the insalubrity is already there. It is a place that is old, and that we must demolish.”

In addition to being unsanitary, the place would also be dangerous according to Nadège.“There are squatters coming in. Between them, here, they kill each other. They are stabbed with knives. The social workers are afraid that the children come here.”
