Gilles and the Ecocean teams are installing artificial habitats on the concrete coastline. The objective: to provide shelter for young fish and allow them to develop better. This is how it works.

With the artificialisation of the coastlines, the coastal areas have lost their role as nurseries for small fish. Ecocean is thus trying to compensate for this lack by adding “biohutsto restore ecological functions to these artificial areas. Gilles thus hopes to participate in maintaining the biodibersity of the aquatic environment.

The biohuts are made of steel which is recyclable and contains oyster shells: “It is really the substrate around which it will come to put a lot of small lives, small shrimps, small fauns fixed in all that which will serve as food for the small fish.“, explains Gille Lecaillon, founding president of the Ecocean company.

More than 4,500 biohuts have been installed in eight years. A large majority are in the French Mediterranean, with 33 ports, 33 marinas equipped. There are also some in Denmark, Mexico and Holland.
