Processionary caterpillars are now considered “species harmful to human health” by the public health code. Brut interviewed Marilou Motter, Coordinator of the Processionary Caterpillar Observatory, to find out more about these insects.

“Right now, there is a lot of talk about processionary caterpillars because there is a legal text that has been published which classifies these species of processionary caterpillars as species harmful to human health in the public health code. “

On April 27, 2022, a decree recognizing the proliferation of processionary caterpillars as harmful to humans was adopted.

Processionary caterpillars are those caterpillars “hairy, who walk in single file in procession with other caterpillars”explains Marilou Motter, Coordinator of the Processionary Caterpillar Observatory. “They are about three to four-five centimeters long”

This species of caterpillars is particularly known for its “stinging hairs”. “At the level of the skin, there can be several different symptoms: either small red pimples, or large red patches, or erythema”.

However, Marilou Motter wishes to recall: “If we see processionary caterpillars and they are not a danger to you or our pets, then leave them alone. Not all caterpillars are dangerous to humans.”
