Going against feminist developments and the #MeToo movement, in the United States, “trad wives” advocate the return of the woman to the home, dedicated to her family and submissive to her husband.
Nearly ten years after the #MeToo wave on Twitter, another hashtag appeared on networks across the Atlantic, #tradwives: “traditional women”. This trend, put forward by several Instagram stars, advocates a strict return to traditional values: the woman stays at home and takes care of the home, while the man works and provides for the needs of his family. The submission of the wife to her husband and the rejection of feminism are two strong pillars of these families with ultra-gendered distribution of tasks.
Solie and Andre, a couple of thirty-something practicing Catholics, cannot imagine living any other way. Solie does not make decisions within the couple and bends to the needs, even intimate ones, of her husband.
Supported by social networks, their way of life is now attracting more and more followers. Rallies are even organized throughout the United States for conservative women. They are encouraged to be good “housewives” and to have as many children as possible.
Supported by Donald Trump’s ultra-conservative movement, “trad wives” are today at the heart of a new social project, that of an America that turns in on itself.
