The American Katonya Breaux has created a sunscreen suitable for dark skin and raises awareness among black people of the importance of sun protection. According to the United States Agency for the Prevention of Diseases, sunscreen is used very little by non-Hispanic black populations. “This idea that black people have fewer wrinkles and that melanin protects them, it’s true but it doesn’t make us invincible to solar radiation and UV rays“, explains Dr. Lian Mack, dermatologist who recommends protecting yourself all year round.

Many black people say that the products available in the market irritate their skin or leave white marks. Katonya Breaux therefore decided to create a mineral and clean sunscreen that adapts to different skin colors. With Unsun Cosmetics, she hopes to improve the representation of diversity in the cosmetics industry. “I didn’t feel included. I was clearly not taken into account by the people who had developed these shades. And yet, we spend millions and billions of dollars, and it’s frustrating to think that nobody thinks of us“, confides Katonya.

Today, she also wants to raise awareness of the importance of sun protection, and the danger of skin cancer.
