With Georges and her bike, Lucie, 21, goes around nursing homes in France to deliver letters written by strangers to residents. Brut found her in Saint-Malo at the nursing homes of La Fontaine au Lièvre and La Haize.

Lucie, 21, explains: “I’m touring France’s nursing homes with my bicycle and I’m coming to spend a little time with you this morning.” When the residents see her coming, “They say it’s the Post Office. In fact, it’s not the Post Office. Well, it’s the postwoman, but the nursing homes” Lucie comments, speaking about herself. Her bike is called Georges, in homage to her farmer grandfather who used to borrow it every morning. Having left Bordeaux on April 4, Lucie went down to Toulouse along the Canal Lateral to the Garonne, with the desire to“meeting people all over France.”

Lucie has joined the association “1 letter 1 smile” which “delivers mail to retirement homes.” She explains : “I immediately adhered to the values, to the concept, which is to write from strangers to strangers who live in nursing homes.” Its objective is clear: “For me, it made sense to distribute mail along my route to bring a smile to people’s faces.“Some residents no longer have any contact with the outside world, as one caregiver mentioned: “There are many who no longer have mail, who no longer have any links with the outside world.” Lucie encourages residents to write in turn, thus creating a virtuous circle of intergenerational exchanges.
