Half a million Nepalese have jobs in Qatar, many of whom have built the infrastructure for the upcoming World Cup. Terrible heat, working conditions and hellish speeds, accidents… If some stay there for several years, even a lifetime, others also die there…

Sova returns to Nepal. He is expected by his wife Durga, 25, his son Siddant, 3, and his mother-in-law. A worker on construction sites in Qatar, he has not returned home for a year and a half. Prem, 45, 15 years from Qatar, arrives alone. Father of five children, carpenter in Qatar, he worked in stadiums. He hasn’t been home for three years. He makes us visit his house of which he is proud, the most beautiful in the village.

When adventure turns to tragedy

If Prem and his family have succeeded, for others, the adventure can turn tragic… Ram, 25, lost his father, who died in May 2022 of cardiac arrest while he was on a scaffolding. He will surely be forced to go to work in Qatar, even if he doesn’t want to. He initiated a procedure for the family to be compensated. Others survive, but at what cost? Indra, 40, is confined to a bed after falling 20 meters from a scaffolding… He only survives thanks to the help of his wife.

A report by Julien Fouchet broadcast in “Special Envoy” on November 3, 2022.
