Some French residents drink pesticide residues in their water every day. The Complément d’Enquête program questioned the quality of drinking water throughout the country.

For the 140 inhabitants of Chemilly-sur-Serein, in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, it has been eight years since they have been able to use tap water. It is too saturated with metabolites, molecules that come from the degradation of pesticides. The inhabitants were subjected to the “precautionary principle”, which prohibits people from drinking tap water because of the presence of pollutants.

Problem: in France, other municipalities should probably have been subject to this same precautionary principle but have never been. According to figures from Complément d’Enquête, for the year 2021, 3,307 municipalities had water that exceeded the authorized thresholds for metabolites. So many localities that should potentially have been alerted to the presence of these pollutants. Get full access to the survey carried out on the quality of tap water in France.
