From the importance of sex education lessons to the mental health of young people after covid, the Minister of National Education and Youth Pap Ndiaye answers questions from Rémy Buisine, journalist for Brut.

I’m going to say it in a bit of a blunt way: you could say that the school is doing badly with the poor. And how are we going to fix that? It is necessary to work for priority education, on the valorization of the establishments which are located in the underprivileged districts.“Since May 20, 2022, he has been appointed Minister of National Education and Youth in the government of Elisabeth Borne, thus succeeding Jean-Michel Blanquer. Today, Pap Ndiaye presents his vision of education and the points to improve in French schools from the start of the school year.

Brut met Pap Ndiaye, Minister of National Education and Youth. And for him, it is essential to ensure the physical and mental health of the country’s young people. “The physical and mental health of young people is one of our concerns because the health crisis, even if it seems to be over in its most violent episodes, has nevertheless left important traces, health traces which will not be reabsorbed in one magic wand. There are special efforts to be made for the well-being of the pupils, also for their psychological, even psychiatric, follow-up outside of school..”

Pap Ndiaye also wishes with his ministry to offer better sex education to children in order to prevent and fight against sexual and gender-based violence. “We must strongly reactivate sex education. For many reasons: reasons of personal development of course, but also reasons related to the prevention and the fight against sexual and gender-based violence. Good sex education is a good way to prevent these forms of violence”, explains the Minister of National Education and Youth.
