Several posts on social media have spread false information related to the recent resurgence of violence between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The clashes have revived old tensions between the two countries.

The east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is seeing the rise of the March 23 movement, the former Tutsi rebellion. Violent fighting pitted the M 23 against the regular Congolese army at the end of May. Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi claimed on Sunday that neighboring Rwanda supported the armed group, which Kigali denied.

This resurgence of violence is fertile ground for the dissemination of decontextualized photos. Thus, photos taken in 2019 in Rwanda during a ceremony to honor the victims of the 1994 genocide were misused.

Likewise, those of a man arrested on June 1 in Nairobi, Kenya. He interrupted Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech on the national holiday, “Madaraka Day”.
