While the US Supreme Court has just reinforced the right to carry a weapon outside your home, teachers across the country are increasing training in their classrooms to best protect themselves from potential attacks.
Device to block the front door, bulletproof bags and satchels, regular training… In addition to traditional education, in most states of the country, American teachers are also responsible for maintaining the safety of their students by case of armed attacks.
Between 2007 and 2017, the share of public schools that carry out this type of exercise rose from 40 to 95%. Faced with this anxiety-provoking climate, teachers share their daily lives on social networks and denounce their difficult working conditions.
“Have you ever wondered if you would die for your customers? It’s not a metaphor, would you be ready to take a bullet to save them? Because it’s a question that all teachers in the United States have asked themselves at one time or another” asks a teacher on TikTok.
“Everyone is living in fear and we are just asking for action to be taken” adds another teacher. “Being a teacher or a student is scary right now, but it could be different” specifies one last.
Some teachers hope to warn about their working conditions. On May 27, the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, left 21 people dead, including 19 children.
