You have surely seen these images that have gone around the world, those of the windows of beauty salons in Kabul, covered with paint to hide the images of women. Often it was the owners themselves who did this, panicked as the Taliban invaded the Afghan capital. It was last August. Brut went to one of those beauty salons in Kabul where the services are aimed at women. Since the Taliban arrived, the economy there has collapsed and far fewer customers are going there.
Since then, these salons have continued to exist, but the women who frequent them go into hiding. “People attending weddings or house parties can wear makeup, but they are not allowed to do so just to go out on the street, due to new restrictions“, explains the manager of the salon.
Today, she hopes the Taliban won’t stop her and her students from working. “We will accept any veils they force us to put on, because we are Muslims and we live in an Islamic state, but they have to let us work and keep this salon open.“, she concludes.
