A line of fire, south of Iceland since Monday December 18. The lava boils for four kilometers. Since Thursday, only fumaroles are still escaping. A respite for the small town of Grindavík (Iceland), three kilometers away. Evacuated residents are allowed to return to their homes for a few hours to take stock of the situation. “Do you see the cracks? They are opening more and more,” watch Sigurdur Thorleifsson. The house is now shaky, and the future uncertain.
The disarray
At best, the authorities plan for residents to return home on December 28. Sigridur Jonasdottir will not return. “I feel like it’s going to start again.”, she says. Six weeks ago, the town’s 4,000 residents had to be evacuated. Impressive faults appeared after an earthquake. The volcano, dormant for 800 years, has awakened. A month and a half later, the lava accumulated under the earth’s crust gushed out. In Iceland, roads appear and disappear with eruptions.
