In 2024, French people spend half as much time on domestic tasks as French women. This is what a survey published by the Barcelona Center for Demographic Studies reveals.
To carry out their survey, researchers from the Barcelona Center for Demographic Studies questioned 74,000 heterosexual couples in fifteen European countries about their habits regarding cleaning at home and the distribution of tasks within the same couple. The result for France: women spend 206 minutes per day on average on household chores compared to 111 minutes for men.
According to this same survey, it is in Greece that the gap is largest between men and women. Greek women spend 4 hours a day shopping, washing dishes and cleaning compared to 59 minutes for men. Such a gap can be explained by two factors: an unemployment rate in Greece for women which is among the highest in Europe and women’s remuneration of -13% on average compared to that of men according to the SEV (Medef Greek). Given these economic realities, more Greek women are stopping work to take care of the home. Discover in the video the reaction of passers-by in Paris to the results of the investigation.
