In 2001, the Taliban provoked one of the worst crimes in the history of archeology by destroying the statues of the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Back in power in August 2021, they monitor from the site. Meeting with Mullah Abdullah Sarhadi who is suspected of having blown up the statues.

“We have applied these decisions in the past, whether they are good or not” explains Mullah Abdullah Sarhadi, governor of Bamiyan province.

Mullah Abdullah Sarhadi is suspected of having organized in 2001 the destruction of the monumental statues of the Buddhas of Bamiyan.

Their destruction is one of the worst crimes in archaeological history. The site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.

Since the return of the Taliban to power, the international community fears in particular for the preservation of the site of Bamiyan and other archaeological sites in the country.
