Political scientist Chloé Morin returns to the definition of the word “wokism” and explains why it is essential, according to her, to be “anti-woke” “when we are on the left today.
“I think you can be left-wing and anti-woke. And I even think that we must be anti-woke when we are on the left today” declares Chloé Morin, political scientist and author of the book When he is twenty. According to her, Wokism is defined as being “a grid for reading the world which divides the world between the dominant and the dominated”. In the “dominant”, she classifies “men, Western countries, former colonial powers, for example”. In the “dominated”, she classifies “sexual minorities, religious minorities or even women. And the goal of the political fight of the wokes is to overthrow the relations of domination. And to do this, all means are good. And this is where things get complicated. In fact, Wokism is the practice of intolerance in the name of tolerance”.
“Today in the political debate, wokism is used in every way to disqualify”
“What we observe is that the word wokism is still very little known, there are 25% of people who know precisely what it is. But the progress curve is impressive. There is no academic agreement on the definition of wokism. Me, I prefer that they discover this word with my definition rather than with the definition offered by the right and the extreme right, who consider that as soon as you fight discrimination, you are woke and therefore you must pass in the garbage. What I see today in the political debate is that wokism has indeed come out in every way, but it has come out in every way to disqualify. It is clear that there is an enterprise of destabilization and disqualification of the left based on the criticism of wokism” considers the political scientist.
“Challenging relationships of domination has always been the role of the left. The problem is doing it in ways that fall outside the realm of acceptability. We must remain within the framework of principles which are those of the rule of law and the Republic. This is simply the heart of the criticism I make of Wokism.” explains Chloé Morin. The political scientist speaks in particular “on American campuses” of the “violence on all sides which was not necessarily denounced”. As for France, it indicates: “I did a survey on this subject in my book and we saw that there was one person in five who said: it is legitimate to use violence to prevent someone from saying offensive words.s”.
