Plastic objects are everywhere: in our kitchen, in our bathroom… Can we do without them? Living without plastic is the challenge that journalist Raphaële Schapira has set herself.
To succeed in this challenge, an accurate diagnosis is needed. The journalist therefore called on a “zero waste” specialist, Pauline Imbault, who will help her clear her cupboards of all the accumulated plastic. Let’s start with the kitchen.
“Zero contact with food”
After sorting the food packaging, exit all utensils containing plastic and replaceable by the same ones made of wood, glass… The principle is simple and clear: “zero contact with food”. No more spatulas, plastic tongs like this one, whose edge melted on contact with the pan, causing its owner to eat plastic. To banish also, the plastic container. Impossible to put a hot meal in it – otherwise it will be colored by the food and, more seriously, the plastic will migrate into the food…
“We are overwhelmed by plastic”
Let’s continue with the closet, filled with plastic boxes that haven’t been used for months and packets of unused freezer bags. Pauline Imbault is not surprised: plastic “is a cheap material, which we bring home very easily without realizing it. It’s really when we take stock, when we try to look at our kitchen, our bathroom, that we can take the measure of… how much we are overwhelmed by plastic“. And to conclude, in front of the contents of the cupboard: “There, there you go, we take the measure.“
