(SPECIAL SENDING / FRANCE 2)

Victims robbed, threatened, kidnapped, beaten in the place where they felt safe: at home… How to recover from such trauma? How to protect yourself from it?

The figure is chilling: 515 home-jackings in 2023, almost one and a half per day, up 8% over one year. But it is above all the method which shocks during these particularly traumatic burglaries. Rains of blows, threats, kidnapping: the main thing, for the criminals, is to cause astonishment in order to seize jewelry, watches or cash in record time. Victims are abused where they felt safest: at home.

The “Special Envoy” team went to meet public figures who have been victims, but also ordinary citizens who are no longer sheltered. Simple traders who openly testify about their physical after-effects, and their fear of simply living at home.

Who are these new types of criminals who are lying in wait for your presence at home? The easy money obtained through violence attracts new little thugs, often minors, recruited on social networks by sponsors to do the dirty work. Many compensate for their inexperience with ultra-violence. According to the Ministry of the Interior and its Central Office for the Fight against Organized Crime, 40% of cases are solved.

But what happens next in court? How to repair injuries? “Special Envoy” met one of these “home-jackers” who, since his release from prison, has been trying to redeem himself. Violence, trauma and reconstruction, investigation into a new phenomenon.

A report by Rémy Vincent, Adèle Latour, Mahé Lhuissier, Anaïs Dupuis and Bassel Hamwi / STP Productions, broadcast in “Envoyéspecial” on October 10, 2024.
