Mehdi is a percussionist specialized in darbouka. From Vivaldi to Aya Nakamura, he takes music from different horizons in order to add his personal touch with his instrument. Brut followed him for a day.
“I turned to music and the darbouka because it’s in me, it’s like that, so I had a hard time considering anything else, in the end.” Passionate about music and darbouka since his childhood, Mehdi creates beats for artists like Soolking. And he intends to change the image of this instrument sometimes considered traditional and popular.
The first time he touched a darbouka was when he was 3 years old at a wedding. Today, Mehdi lives from his passion and collaborates with artists to create original pieces and change the image associated with his instrument. “A few years ago, I said to myself that taking over songs where, basically, we wouldn’t necessarily see the darbouka on them, that could be interesting, and above all, I really wanted people to understand that the darbouka is is a musical instrument. It is not only specific to the cultural heritage, specific to the East and the Maghreb”
For about 7 years, the young artist has been living from his passion. Recently, he collaborated with Soolking for his last track “Dalida”, where he adds an original touch thanks to his instrument. And for Mehdi, the darbouka can adapt to any musical style.
