Since 2015, the Civil Code considers animals as living beings endowed with sensitivity: in the eyes of the law, they can now be treated as victims… or accused.
Animals now have their lawyers, whether they are victims or… accused! The judges have the mission to protect them but can also condemn them to death, by requiring their euthanasia. Since 2015, animals have been recognized by the Civil Code as “living beings endowed with sensitivity” and are no longer, in the eyes of the law, mere objects.

Acts of animal abuse have increased by 30% in the space of five years. The penalties were reinforced by law in 2021 and the courts are increasingly condemning the perpetrators of violence. Now, it is more common for perpetrators of serious abuse to receive prison sentences. “Special Envoy” followed these animal legal cases and accompanied to the court master Isabelle Gharbi-Terrin, a lawyer who does not hesitate to plead on behalf of the cats and dogs she represents at the bar.
