They knew, and they didn’t do anything. As early as 1971, Total was aware that the combustion of fossil fuels risked causing global warming. This is confirmed by a document found by Complément d’Investigation …

The global warming that we are experiencing today, the oil companies foresaw. Benjamin Franta is a researcher at the prestigious Stanford University, near San Francisco. His specialty: the history of oil companies. And in their archives, he found this book published at the end of the 1950s. As early as 1959, a renowned scientist warned oil companies of the risks to the climate caused by the combustion of the fossil fuels they produce. Further investigation found an unpublished document which already alerted Total employees in 1971.
