(Paris) The trailer for GTA VIlatest installment of the successful video game franchise Grand Theft Autosurpassed 100 million views on YouTube on Wednesday, just more than 30 hours after its release on Monday.
The video, however, did not break the YouTube record for the number of views in 24 hours still held by the South Korean boy band BTS, with more than 108 million views for the video for “Butter”.
The trailer, also posted online Monday by its publisher Rockstar Games on GTA Vwhich is the second best-selling video game in history.
The studio had planned to broadcast it Tuesday at 9 a.m. (Eastern time), but had decided to anticipate its posting online because of a “leak,” he said.
The excitement was such that the trailer exceeded 60 million views on YouTube in the space of 12 hours, breaking a record claimed by American YouTuber MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson.
Highlight of the trailer: the introduction of the character of Lucia, freshly released from prison in a setting similar to that of Florida, making her the first playable female character in the franchise, which has been criticized for decades for its representation women, minorities and LGBTQIA+ people.
Set to the soundtrack of Tom Petty’s “Love is a Long Road,” the video contains everything people around the world have come to love – or hate – in GTA : frantic chases, scantily clad women and numerous nods to social media culture.
Fans almost universally praised these bits of action – the video on YouTube has racked up 9 million views likesbut many have commented on the time elapsed between the fifth and sixth editions.
“At this rate, I have about three GTA in my life,” YouTubers The Slow Mo Guys wrote in response to the trailer.
