Judith Chemla was the victim of violence from several of her ex-partners. Today she talks about these periods in her book “Our silence left us alone”.

We feel ashamed when we experience this. We are ashamed of having chosen a violent spouse. We are ashamed to dare to say that this happens. We are ashamed, it’s true, but we are not responsible for the violence of others”. Actress and opera singer, Judith Chemla was the victim of violence at the hands of several of her former spouses. Today she breaks the silence. Denial, inability to leave because of the children, feeling of powerlessness… Multiple factors can cause a person to remain a victim of domestic violence. “And then we don’t want to recognize ourselves as a victim. However, it is necessary” affirms Judith Chemla who adds that “the more we are in denial, the harder it hits us in the face.” She testifies: “You don’t have power over your man and he shouldn’t have power over you. The truth is that there are beings who decide not to change. And even when they tell you “I’m going to change”, they are terrible traps.”

“We only find our power when we really agree to look things in the face”

It was during the summer of 2022 that the actress “a start” and decides to leave. She leaves her daughter’s father and files a complaint. “What also plays tricks on me is that I don’t realize how serious it is. I know it’s not okay, but years later I return to another violent relationship because I haven’t gotten back to what allowed me to endure this” analyzes Judith Chemla today. Finally out of this destructive pattern, the actress wanted to testify publicly to encourage a “societal awakening” on the issue, and perhaps raise awareness among other victims. “And above all me, what gave me strength… Months before leaving, I made a very small choice within myself to tell myself: my light is mine. I will take care of it and I will not allow anyone to put it out” concludes Judith Chemla.
