CCTV footage released by local police shows the surreal scene filmed at Sunae station in the south of the capital, reports the Korea Herald.

The escalator that is supposed to go up starts to descend suddenly, propelling users against each other. Some people are even propelled, and pushed to the sides.

At least three people were seriously injured in the incident, including backs and legs, and 11 others were treated for minor injuries.

The escalator was later closed for investigation. Some witnesses thought at the time that the shooting of a film was in progress so much the scene seemed unreal.

The staircase had been inspected last May and showed no anomalies.

Such an incident also occurred in one of the busiest metro stations in Rome in October 2018 and injured more than 20 people.
