“It’s huge to have this dog with us, who is there, watching us all the time, paying attention to us all the time”. Diabetics, Emma and Enzo each have a companion to help them. Brut met them.
Rumba and Perle are trained to detect low sugar levels by smell. The two dogs watch over their master on a daily basis and help them prevent the dangers associated with the disease.
Animals are able just by smell to detect the sign of hypoglycaemia. When female dogs smell something unusual, they begin to “poker” their master, that is, to nudge their muzzle.
Diabetes leads to a disruption of blood sugar levels that can lead, in the most serious cases, the patient to a comatose state.
Before becoming a companion, each dog receives 6 to 10 months of training. These trainings are financed by the Acadia association which generally collects shelter dogs.
Once trained, the association entrusts the animals to people with diabetes free of charge, in order to facilitate their daily lives.
