More than half a million people have landed in refugee camps. On the spot, the NGOs and the government are overwhelmed.
They settled where they could in fields, under simple plastic sheeting all around the big city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The number of displaced people fleeing the fighting continues to increase. “My children have gone begging, they are going to bring back something to eat. We don’t have a shower or even a toilet. I lost everything, I don’t even have enough to feed my family. I’m in end,” says Joséphine, a refugee whose village was attacked by M23 rebels.
A group supported by Rwanda
This group, heavily armed and supported by Rwanda, took up arms again a year ago, after ten years of absence. They fight against the Congolese army. They took control of several territories in North Kivu. In recent months, they have been gaining ground and getting closer to Goma, the provincial capital.
