Trees several hundred years old will be felled at the foot of the Eiffel Tower to allow the city of Paris to build a real estate project. This decision is described as anti-ecological by the association SOS Paris.

This project aims to build offices for the staff of the Eiffel Tower in particular, but also shops for tourists.

“We have a town hall that claims to be ecological, but which is making us an anti-ecological project, since we are going to cut down lots of trees, destroy large plots of open ground”, explains Philippe Khayat, the representative of France Nature Environnement Paris and SOS Paris.

At the same time, the project plans to replant new trees in the neighborhood. “But that doesn’t suit us at all” says Philippe Khayat.

According to him, when trees are replanted, some die. And we also have to wait several decades before seeing the same benefits as those brought by the trees that already exist.

According to Emmanuel Grégoire, deputy mayor in charge of town planning, replanting new trees is useful: “So that in 100 years, there will be huge ones in Paris, we must also replant young ones”.
