Are foxes a problem in France? On the occasion of the reopening of fox hunting on June 5, Brut asked the same questions to a protector of animals and a defender of hunting. Here are their answers.
For Jean-Michel, member of the National Federation of Hunters, “human intervention is needed to limit fox population explosions”. But Ariane, lawyer for an association for the protection of animals, is not of the same opinion.
“Today, nothing justifies the relentlessness of which the fox is the victim”she says. “For us, the fox brings more solutions than problems, it is a valuable ally for some farmers.”
On June 5, the fox hunting season will begin in France. Each year, between 500 and 600,000 foxes are killed, and opinions are divided.
“The fox can pose a problem with certain diseases that can be transmitted to humans”, explains Jean-Michel. But for Ariane, “killing a fox that is carrying a disease is completely useless and counterproductive.”
“A study showed that after intensive culling for 4 years, the density had not changed, and the prevalence of the disease had increased”continues the lawyer.
