Salman Mukaev lived in Chechnya. Arrested by police and tortured after being accused of being gay, he was used as bait to trick LGTBQ + people into dating sites. He managed to escape to Armenia, but his life remains in danger. He tells.
“They said I was gay, I said I didn’t understand what they were talking about, but they had already thrown me on the floor and had cables hooked to my fingers. They started to shock me. “Salman Mukaev lived in Chechnya and was married to a woman. In February 2020, he was arrested by the police at his home. After several hours of torture, he agreed to help the police trap homosexuals on a dating site . “The mission was to register on the Meet24 website, and meet gay men, and I had to report them“, he says. Salman is aware that he can be blamed for this.”Anyone who is tortured probably knows that they use a multitude of very elaborate methods that go as far as literal rape.“, he breathes.
Salman Mukaev was detained for a week. Upon his return home, he decided to leave Chechnya. He confides that he was not believed when he told his story and that he was confronted with similar situations. “At this very moment, I am in Armenia and my life is in danger, because a case has been filed against me and a wanted notice has been issued against me.“, explains Salman. He fears being extradited to Russia and then to Chechnya.”And over there you probably know what will happen“, he breathes. Salman Muakev transmitted this video to the independent Russian newspaper Novaïa Gazeta to publicize his story.
Since 2017, Chechen LGBTQ + people have suffered violent waves of persecution denounced by international associations. They are arrested, tortured, raped, detained in secret prisons. The leader of the Russian Republic of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov has always denied these purges, even going so far as to say that there were no gays in Chechnya.
Today, associations denounce persecutions which have become systemic, in particular with Chechen police officers who extort large sums of money from the victims and their families and torture to the point of death.
