Another threat is growing among young people on social networks. 12,000 reports were collected in one year for intimate video blackmail. Victims often face threats, stolen images and ransom demands.
Conversing with strangers is a habit on social media. But certain sendings of nude photos give rise to blackmail. The phenomenon of “sextortion” exploded in 2023, with 120,000 cases recorded.
At the age of 17, Camille was contacted by a man on Instagram. They exchanged photos, then the blackmailer threatened to release her photos if she did not pay him. “I didn’t eat anymore, I didn’t go out anymore… My father was starting to worry, I wasn’t going to work anymore.” remembers Camille. She was forced to pay 700 euros over four months, before attempting suicide.
A phenomenon difficult to stem
A call platform, 3018, collects many stories similar to that of the young woman. On the phone, worried teenagers, young women but also young men. Because of guilt and shame, young people rarely dare to confide in their family.
According to a psychologist from 3018, you should avoid taking photos of any distinctive signs and keep your accounts private. At the police unit dedicated to minors, the fight against “sextortion” is a priority, but the phenomenon is difficult to stem. The psychological consequences on the victims are major. In the United States, where “sextortion” is widespread, 4% of victims commit suicide.
