Since the shock of Camille Kouchner’s book on the rape of her brother by her stepfather, the independent commission called CIIVISE has been collecting testimonies of incest across France to provide a listening ear.

A public meeting was organized by the independent commission on incest and sexual violence against children in Lille (Nord). Until the last moment, some were not sure to come and others were just waiting for it. Victims of incest testify before the independent commission which has been touring France for three months.

A 54-year-old woman has seen terrible memories come to the surface. “I just found out that I was abused from 3 to 10 years old. When it hits you, so many years later, it’s a tsunami”, she testifies with tears in her eyes. In Lille, that evening, there is no longer any room for silence. For victims, incest is rooted in the present. A new public meeting will take place in Paris on February 16. Nearly 9,000 people have already given their testimony.
